Bobby Zamora: Usless fact of the Day No 94

August 26, 2007

The News of the World tells us this morning that Bobby Zamora has committed 14 fouls this season - more than anyother Premier League player. As if we couldn;t have guessed that for ourselves…

The Quiet Rise of George McCartney

April 29, 2007

I suspct I wasn’t alone in questioning the signing of George McCartney from a relegated Sunderland team. It took him a long time to get into the team and his first few games were distinctly average. But in the last ten games McCartney has developed into quite a player. He’s never going to be a headline grabber, but his quiet efficiency hasn’t gone unnoticed. A couple of nightmare performances earlier in the season have been forgotten after a series of quality showings in which he has been excellent defensively and far more confident going forward. In short, he’s now made the position his own. His run down the left in the game against Wigan exemplified how far he has come. He just would not have had the confidence to make that run earlier in the season.

George McCartney, we salute you.

Callum Davenport Signs

January 17, 2007

I understand we have signed Callum Davenport from Spurs - he is a player I really rate. When he was on loan with us he was superb and I regretted at the time that he did not come to us permanently. Better late than never.

Pete May is Wrong on Konchesky

January 7, 2007

The great thing about football matches is that 30,000 people can watch them and have 30,000 different views of player performances. Pete May (author of HAMMERS IN THE HEART), for example, thinks Paul Konchesky has been hammer of the Season so far. Excuse me? This is what he’s written in today’s Observer… “Only Konchesky and Sheringham have played to their potential”. He selects Konchesky as his “star man” of the season so far. If he had written that this time last year I’d have agreed with him, but not now. Going forward he has shown a dire lack of crossing ability and defensively he has also been shown wanting on occasions. Don;t get me wrong, I’m an admirer of his, but for Pete May to pick him as the best player this season so far is a travesty.
