Gabbidon Captains Wales

I was presenting my programme last night on 18 Doughty Street when I got an MSN message on my computer from a viewer informing me that Danny Gabbidon had had an absolute stormer of a match for Wales. Anyone else see it? Let’s hope it heralds a return to the kind of form he showed in the season before last.

hah… This is the only thing the Times has to say about Gabbidon in the match…

Wales were frantically holding on. Velizar Dimitrov scurried through but Hennessey smothered his shot wide and then Danny Gabbidon, attempting to clear the ball, struck against his own post. The West Ham United defender then gave away a free kick on the edge of the box, but the wall blocked the shot.

Stormer… or Howler? anyone see it?

Gabbidon should be the first name on the team sheet. He is our best defender by far. His reading of the game is exceptional. He’s much lighter on his feet than I’m-carrying-a-grand-piano-on-my-shoulders-with-lead-in-my-boots-upson.

In a game for Wales against Italy, when Danny used to be at Cardiff, he received glowing praise from Allesandro Del Piero after marking him out of the game. Del Piero was quoted as saying that he couldn’t believe Gabbidon played in the 2nd deivision.

I understand he was injured but with the way we defended against City, he should be back in. My starting two would be: 1. Gabbidon 2. Ferdinand (after a kick up the backside), Collins and Upson would be 3 and 4 respectively.

let s hope you re right. extending his contract ,captaining wales, wales winning the match and gabbidon himself having a good game won t hurt his confidence.

as for the england match , i thought shorey was the worst player on the pitch , apart from paul robinson. west ham shud think very carefully about buying him, and the price we pay. for a player who gets bandied about all over the media and web, he looked distinctly average.

I must say i didnt watch the game but heard the same. I would have like to see gabbs start in right back while lucas is injured. i also think he could do a job in left back if we fail to get our targets, much the same as gallas did at chelsea as has similar attributes and also would bring pace to the defence (maybe to cover upson as he is not looking as assured as i thought he was). obviously this would be a stop gap but something to think about.

agree on gabbidon potentially being able to fill role in left back if needed, though i still feel mccartney is better than people credit him for. i m not so sure we need to spend silly money on shorey, especially after wtaching him vs germany, when we have players like gabbidon , and possibly even collins even though he s reallya central defender, who cud fill the slot.

as for the times description of gabbidon, wud u expect anything less? another overrated ragsheet populated by obese numbnuts with an agenda.
