West Ham Above Canada at Olympics

According to a correspondent on the West Ham Mailing List, West Ham are doing rather well in the Olympics.

Mark Hunter, who won a gold medal in the lightweight double sculls, grew up in Poplar, lives in Romford, and is a mad-keen Irons fan. And Christine Ohuruogu, who has just won the 400 metres, is a regular at All Saints’ Church, West Ham, where her mum is a churchwarden.

That means that West Ham has won as many golds as Canada at the moment.

Anyone know any other British olympians who have West Ham connections?

Tut Tut Ian a man of your knowledge about all things West Ham and you missed the fact that Bradley Wiggins wasa former Hammers trialist and is rumoured to be a supporter:>)

I think FourFourTwo mag did an article on this, and if I remember correctly Bradley Wiggins was a West Ham fan (?)

I am Canadian and I am a bit embarrassed to say Canada has never, and likely will not ever, support our Olympic athletes. We are one of the few countries left who do not pay our athletes when they win a medal, and they receive little to no public funding while they train.

  4. Scott says:

Surely then, West Ham would be below Canada alphabetically if we both have 2 goald medals? How can we be above them?

its 2 bloody cold in canada 2 put them little shorts on and all the pools are frozen!!!

I’m a West Ham fan, English citizen residing in Canada. I don’t know how I feel!

  7. Dave Grandy says:

Or that west Ham athletes have won 2 more medals than the club has top flight championships.

  8. Tyler De Jong says:

Canadians have plenty of incentive to do well. Heck, a bunch of swimmers who didn’t even medal still got new cars for thier troubles. Anyways, why should they get public funding for playing games? If they are good enough, they can get sponsorships. A little bit of ridicule isn’t worth sinking my money for a bit of fleeting pride every 4 years. Mostly the lack of medals just means that its just much more special for us Canadians when we do get one

My embarassment is about even. Yes Canada is about even with West Ham in gold medals, but then the Hammers lost to the MLS all-stars, held this year in Toronto.
Something wrong with both of those pictures, ehhh!!!!

Too my knowledge (Heard on Radio one today) Team GB don’t get any official money for winning medals. All money (if any) comes from endorsements and sponsorship etc afterwards.

Also we have only recently started to get funding from the lottery, they is why you can see the cast improvement in this years Team compared to previous

I’m a West Ham supporter in Canada and I recently heard the complete opposite. Canada has newly imposed an Olympic program called “Own the Podium” in anticipation of the 2010 games in Vancouver as well as other recently instated programs. Athletes are receiving funding for medals depending on colour (gold, silver, bronze) and are receiving more funding to train from the government as well as through private donors such as team visa.

Canada may not do very well in the Summer olympics, but where are those British athletes when the Winter Olympics come around? 😛

I didn’t know that the MLS All-Crap were the Canadian National team. Plus if the hammers were looking for the win then they would of put out more experienced players but they decided to give there youngsters a go. After all they are the ‘Academy of Football’

Friendly’s mean nothing. Just goes to show that the Canadians still follow there yankee cousins about how they know nothing about football.

I am also a West Ham fan who lives in Toronto. Canada’s inability to win gold medals is due to their own short-sightedness. Around1984 I travelled to Holland from England to participate in a tournament at the brand new Devanter Hockey club astro-turf pitch. Prior to the tournament there was a women’s international hockey match between the world number one Canada versus the world number two Holland. Holland ran out as winners of that match. The game was televised live in Holland whereas the Canadians have not dedicated any air time for such a sport. Shortly therafter ladies hockey was introduced in the olympics, but the Canadians were overtaken by many other nations in that sport. Just proves my point about the short-sightedness of the Canadians who still cannot understand how the medals are so difficult to come by.
