Arsenal Preview & Open Thread

I would be astonished if the lineup changed for the match this afternoon against Arsenal. Why on earth would you change a winning team. No doubt there are several readers who believe that Savio Nsereko should get a starting place. I disagree. The short burst we saw of him on Wednesday was highly encouraging, but I think it would be disruptive to change the lineup today.

Believe me, we should go into this game confident of winning it. And it is in midfield where we will win or lose it. If Behrami, Collison, Parker and Noble can dominate the centre of the pitch they can snuff out much of Arsenal’s threat.

I would love to have a ticket for the game, but sadly I shall be reduced to listening to the audio commentary. If anyone knows where one can find a video feed, please say so in the comments.

UPDATE: Julien Faubert’s loan move to Real Madrid has been confirmed. Who’d have thunk?

I agree Iain. Start with the same team as against Hull, and if things aren’t quite going our way, or we don’t look like breaking through- THEN we can bring Savio on and I do believe he can be a man who steps up for us tonight if we are in need.

If it is 0-0 10 minutes before half time and Arsenal look weak, then maybe a short burst of Nsereko before half time could be very influential on the team (and possibly scoreline).I’d like to think the scoreline could be at least 2-0 possibly 3/4-0 as that could really put pressure on Man U (not that there isn’t alot of pressure on them already about versing westham).

Then let us see if the press can play us down again. Maybe they might jump the WHU bandwagon if a big victory occurs. (like alot of westham fans did with Cole when he started scoring)

Also i know Motd does post videos on footytube late for Westham, so is there any other sites for watching games when they don’t appear on footytube? With Arsenal playing, it might be an incintive for the highlights video to go up earlier i guess.

  2. delmo says:

    Hi ya Iain,

Got a good vibe about today!!!! Worse case scenario I can see is a draw, and how many times in the past have we been able to be confident saying that?

Anyways if you need a link:

This always seems to work quite well.

    Enjoy the game, COYI!!!

  3. spencer says:

Hi Iain this streaming site is very good, you will have to pay £3.50 and download the software but you get watch 3 of six games on show today,

  4. claire says:

Today’s Guardian says Savio isn’t even on the bench for the game. Anyone know different? (The dear old Guardian has been known to get it wrong in the past)

  5. Dujon says:

I’d like to think they are wrong. If anything Savio will provide fresh young blood and enthusiasm into the team.

  6. Dave in notts says:

If you google livefootydoctor and follow the instructions you can usually watch all the 3.00 oclock premiership games live. It works for me.

  7. nickynicknick says:

Deffo 4-0 score in this match… the glorious gooners!!
We are due a good bashing of a lower team and you are the ones in the firing line. Bye bye false cockneys.

  8. Johnboy says:

FSI is a good site, or I was on West Ham Process for Hull and he did a blinding job keeping the feeds coming. They were few a far between. Good chat banter through the game, too.

  9. CC says:

Living in Ireland and game is being shown live on Setanta Sports Ireland… So, will be in the local for 1pm, get lunch out of the way and settle down for the feast of football that lies ahead…

What a day it could be… Beating the gooners on their own patch and Faubert heading out the door…!! COYI !!!

  10. Big_Casino says:

I’d line-up 4-5-1. With Savio in for Di Michele:

  11. colney says:

if it aint broken dont fix it.simple

  12. Big_Casino says:

With all due respect, Hull, Fulham and Hartlepool are not Arsenal at the Emirates.

We can play 451 and still be offensive with the likes of Behrami, Noble, Collison and Savio in midfield.

  13. gossy says:

One of the joys of living in New York is breakfast and a game, I’ll be down the pub with Setanta, Leave the team as it is. Di Michele has played his way in, you can’t drop him. Big game for Cole, needs goals against big teams. Cole’s goals shown below:

    27 August v Macclesfield (h) – 1
    30 August v Blackburn (h) – 1
    27th September v Fulham (a) – 1
    5th October v Bolton (h) – 1
    26th December v Portsmouth (a) – 1
    28th December v Stoke (h) – 1
    3rd January v Barnsley (h) – 1
    10th January v Newcastle (a) – 1
    18th January v Fulham (h) – 1
    28th January v Hull (h) – 1

Does not seem to net against the big clubs, very important to develop into playing well and scoring against big clubs if he wants to lead the line for us over the next few years. He has the confidence now, lets see him get stuck into the Gooners.

  14. IronMick says:

I’ll be watching the game in the pub via a decommissioned Russian satellite or something! Really looking forward to the game, I too cannot really see Zola changing the team.
I hope that we really take the game to them today, attack is the best form of defense and all that,at the back is where arsenal have been weak recently.

  15. Dujon says:

Casino that is a very nice line-up actually.

That with Noble, Parker and Behrami being workhorses in the middle of the field, and Savio and Collison being slightly more aggressive (more so Savio.

  16. graybo guestmeister says:

Reading the piece on Steve Clarke in the Daily Fail (washes mouth out), it underlines the fact that the simpler you can make this game, the better the outcome.

Perfect illustration Carlton Cole. His game has been stripped down to the following. Move, receive, control, pass (or score!). And it doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that. Look at the result.

Also, interesting that they team are learning to hunt in little packs, hounding down the opposition.

This is brilliant. I so hope we can get something out of today’s game …ooh, sorry I came over all teenager then :o)

Anyway… sorry, this might sound selfish, but Headmaster made a comment last night to the effect that something I’d said on here had struck a chord and was being reported on OLAS. I can’t see it myself, but I’m curious… anyone got any idea what it might be?

  17. GoatyGav says:

One each for me today. Di Mic & Adebayor to score.

  18. Scott says:

One of the Soccer Saturday lads, when they heard about Faubert’s loan to Real Madrid said “Hos agent should be knighted by the Queen!”

  19. GoatyGav says:

Did he say it was from the Hartlepool comments Graybo?

  20. Graybo says:

Hi GoatyGav, hope your lad had a good time this morning.

No, Headmaster didn’t give much away… doesn’t really matter, though. I was just curious.

Anybody watching the stream? My screen keeps pausing for a split second at crucial moments… still, mustn’t complain.

  21. Graybo says:

One-way traffic, eh? Soak it up, boys, and hit ’em on the break.

  22. HammersWest says:

got great stream here, arsenal putting on the pressure

  23. Graybo says:

Is it just my stream or is there absolutely no atmosphere?

  24. Graybo says:

Neill is in for a torrid afternoon.

  25. HammersWest says:

I agree really flat. Nasri much faster than Neill, hang on I can hear Bubbles now

  26. HammersWest says:

that was better till Behrami hacked

  27. hamster says:

  28. Graybo says:

hmmm… lost the stream, reverting to 5Live

  29. HammersWest says:

Graybo try this he has a second stream going

  30. Graybo says:

    Great… thanks, boys.

  31. Paul M says:

spuds are 1 down – come on bolton

  32. Graybo says:

    Hull one-up v WBA

  33. HammersWest says:

    half time thoughts??

  34. Graybo says:

Got the radio on as well as the stream… we’re about three minutes behind real time

  35. Paul M says:

half time 0-0 good defensive display. Parker bang on form, again.

  36. Graybo says:

They are there for the taking, those Gooners.

  37. Paul M says:

we need some pace up front – time for savio me thinks

  38. Graybo says:

I think it’s going pretty much as we expected. Looks like our guys are playing to the game plan, and it’s working so far.

  39. Graybo says:

Right… just off to the bottle bank, back for the second half

  40. HammersWest says:

Really solid in defence so far

  41. HammersWest says:

    Bottlebank hurry Graybo

  42. Scott says:

Arsenal usually don’t have a Plan B. If our defense stays solid, we CAN hit them on the break.

  43. Paul M says:

    ere we go

  44. HammersWest says:

    here we go COYI

  45. Graybo says:

Stupid free-kick by Neill for that push. Am I the only one who gets infuriated by this side of his game? Pointless free-kick led to a few chances and some serious pressure.

  46. Paul M says:

    gooners looking threatening now

  47. Graybo says:

If they continue to build up the momentum it could get a bit worrying when they bring on van Persie.

  48. HammersWest says:

    great tackle Colli

  49. Paul M says:

neil not looking toogood keeps giving fouls away

  50. Graybo says:

Anyone concerned that we will be tiring soon, having chased and marked for so long?

  51. Paul M says:

    is noble playing ????????

  52. Graybo says:

Coo, yes, good point Paul M… must be doing a lot of work off the ball, if we’re going to be generous

  53. Graybo says:

… any money on a West Ham sending-off?

  54. HammersWest says:

lets hope this new fitness regime is working, so far we are everywhere

  55. Paul M says:

knoghthood for clarkey, he has reall sorted our defenders out

  56. Paul M says:

one way traffic how long can we carry on like this

  57. Graybo says:

A goal must be coming, boys, because on the radio they are saying how comfortable we are at the back. They are making the point that it is not backs-to-the-wall defending, but good, solid defending.

    Commentator’s curse?

  58. Paul M says:

    i’d take a point now

  59. Paul M says:

    adebayooooooooooooorrr what a miss

  60. HammersWest says:

they are calling for van persie ouch that was close

  61. Paul M says:

we need to take some pressure off, a bit of keep ball please boys

  62. Graybo says:

Phew… we are hanging on a bit now

  63. HammersWest says:

Neil is playing well now can’t believe I said that

  64. Paul M says:

    time for a change GZ

  65. Paul M says:

their getting closer, only a matter of time now

  66. Graybo says:

Surely not LBM… wouldn’t surprise me, though.

    Here comes VP

  67. Paul M says:

    were the hell is noble??????????

  68. onechristiandailly says:

Looking ominous. But I think we can hit them on the break – Cole’s got them worried!

  69. Paul M says:

bender is going off for VP

  70. HammersWest says:

    hang on boys

  71. Paul M says:

come on GZ out turn for a change

  72. chris says:

I would of thought after our exellent attacking football latley,we would of tried the same against one of the top teams.
How long before they score that goal, then we start playing,
boring boring boring stuff, good defending but I dont dont favor these stactics.

  73. HammersWest says:

    here comes Savio

  74. Graybo says:

This is getting a bit tense now… think I might have to go for a walk.

    (only kidding)

  75. Paul M says:

Saviooooooooooooooooooo come on boy give it sum stick

  76. HammersWest says:

    good call GZ

  77. chris says:

Mind you arsenal do have a lot of pace…..

  78. GoatyGav says:

Savio – on you go son!!!!

  79. Paul M says:

  80. Graybo says:

‘Noble has been relatively quiet today,’ says radio, as he comes off … er, slight understatement.

  81. HammersWest says:

  82. GoatyGav says:

Heart in mouth moment. Good hands Greeno!

  83. Paul M says:

fingernails all gone, down to the bone now !!

  84. Graybo says:

My stream is well behind yours and the radio… adds to the tension

  85. onechristiandailly says:

Mine too – just seen the Green save. Go Savio!

  86. Graybo says:

Stupid attempted back heel by Cole to give ball away, he needs to remember to play it simple, which has proved so successful for him in past weeks.

  87. Graybo says:

What was Joan Collins thinking of, for that Adebeyour header?

  88. Paul M says:

    filty git Vela

  89. HammersWest says:

    yeah Parker

  90. Paul M says:

we had a shot on goal !!!!!!

  91. HammersWest says:

    nice one Savio

  92. chris says:

    Its coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  93. chris says:

    Spuds score twice,bad day 😦

  94. Graybo says:

Savio looks nicely balanced, and confident, from the few flashes we’ve seen. Showing well to receive passes.

  95. Graybo says:

still think we are going to lose to a disputed pen

  96. Paul M says:

    referees a gooner

  97. Paul M says:

savio does have a nice touch

  98. chris says:

We cant hold this out for much longer, can we?

  99. chris says:

    Messer is on

  100. HammersWest says:

I afree Graybo, it’ll be a pen, but we’ve been brilliant so far NO not lbm

  101. Graybo says:

LBM coming on… unlikely hero, but hope I’m wrong

  102. Paul M says:

come on boys 10 more minutes
LBM coming on, wouldn’t it be good for him to score now – come on luis you owe us one, make yourself a hero

  103. Paul M says:

fair swap he will hassle well and chase his arse off

  104. Graybo says:

Chris, have you done that washing-up yet?

  105. HammersWest says:

LBM now would be a good time to shine

  106. Graybo says:

Yes, come on, LBM… you can do a job for us today. No silly fouls on the edge of the box, boys!

  107. chris says:

Cant we buy nugent he an’t bad!
    got pace.

  108. GoatyGav says:

Come on lads – last 5 – remember what SC’s been drilling in to you.

  109. Paul M says:

    last 5

  110. Graybo says:

Classic time for Arsenal to get a 1-0 win… fingers nails nibbling time.

  111. chris says:

upson and collins massive today, but you know the arse will score, gits.

  112. Paul M says:

if we get a pen who takes it?

  113. HammersWest says:

    I can hear bubbles COYI

  114. chris says:

    No nails left.
    shouting at misses!!

  115. Paul M says:

    come on upson

  116. chris says:

    Me I’ll take it paul.

  117. onechristiandailly says:

    Collins just gets better

  118. Paul M says:

    breather time

  119. GoatyGav says:

Great block Collins – pure class.

  120. onechristiandailly says:

  121. Graybo says:

  122. Paul M says:

  131. Graybo says:

I don’t think we should have played it any other way.

  132. GoatyGav says:

How much do you reckon he’ll add on?

  133. GoatyGav says:

    Really depends on that Chris.

  134. Graybo says:

I just got this message from the server.

You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.

  135. Paul M says:

    VP haha

  136. Graybo says:

    I can’t… I’m so tense.

  137. GoatyGav says:

I do get VEEEERY worried when Greeno comes for the ball like that. Seen him misscue so many times.

  138. Graybo says:

My screen has only just shown the Green punch… glad I have radio on as well. Nice to see the pix, though

  139. chris says:

    You no whats coming

  140. HammersWest says:

    fingers crossed

  141. Paul M says:

    that should be it now

  142. Graybo says:

    One last chance

  143. Paul M says:

  144. chris says:

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!! great tactics then boys hhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaa

  145. HammersWest says:

    yes we did it

  146. Graybo says:

This is not bad, is it? Point at Emirates, point at Anfield… well done, lads.

  147. Paul M says:

    not pretty but heho

  148. chris says:

    paul you feel the same.

  149. Graybo says:

… and I was forgetting the draw at Stamford Bridge

  150. Paul M says:

    and a point against chelski

  151. Paul M says:

    feel the same what chris

  152. GoatyGav says:

A point there is a great result. Tees up the game with Man Utd nicely next week.

  153. DevoDevo says:

Backs to the wall job, but looked pretty comforta\ble all game.

  154. HammersWest says:

The team are so much fitter now, Arsenal looked worse at the end

  155. westhamutd says:

  156. Paul M says:

    wots the spuds score?

  157. onechristiandailly says:

Good point – Green barely tested, although they had a lot of possession. Parker and Behrami immense. Bring on Man U.

  158. Paul M says:

    upson pretty good too

  159. SwedeHammer says:

oooohhh I can finally breath OUT..what a way to fight boys..the streak continues..

  160. HammersWest says:

  163. James says:

COYI!!!! Spuds going down what a year this could be!!

  164. DevoDevo says:

    Green 8
    Neill 6
    Upson 8
    Collins 8
    Ilunga 7
    Collison 6
    Noble 6
    parker 10
    Behrami 9
    Cole 7
    Di Michele 6

    Savio 6
    LBM 6

Job well done. Collins & Upson look better and better each week. Midfield tireless. Cole ploughed lone furrow well.

    Spurs lost 🙂

  165. GoatyGav says:

Greeno starting to look more confident and commanding whilst still being a good shot stopper. Should be England’s number 1 now. What do you reckon?

  166. Daveip1966 says:

That was tense and no mistake. We get live tv feeds here in Malaysia and I was biting down to my knuckles (especially when my main bar shut with 20 minutes to go).

Anyway, that’s a result i’m happy with. Ginnnge was immense. Don’t know about Upson since both bars were without commentary, but the tv pics were all about Collins.

It didn’t seem there were many chances on either side, but overall, I’m very happy with a point.

    Roll on next weekend

  167. Ian the Hammer says:

Real Madrid have not only taken Faubert on loan but paid us 1.5 million for the plesure!!!!!

  168. StainesWestHam says:

What a great draw. Some immense performances particularly from Collins, Upson and Scott Parker. A big well done to the team and also the management team at the club for keeping hold of our best players. It’s really interesting to see that Spurs lost at Bolton today too. It’s turning in to a bit of a nightmare for ‘arry. Having just looked at their run in, they could be in all sorts of bother…..

  169. the headmaster says:

We were immense today. Particularly Parker, Behrami and Ginge.
Devo – Dimichele worth a 7 in my view mate – intelligent player.
Happy happy days – and the spuds lost!

  170. Basildon Bob says:

Listened in on the Radio, sounded like a professional job from the boys. Football First tonight rather then the obligatory 10 mins and a “how poor were Arsenal” comment from Lawrenson & co on MOTD.

Spuds did well today, Arry must be really cheesed off, not to mention the fans. Monday is gonna be alot fun in the office with the Spurs boys.

Bit suprised with the Faubert/Real Madrid transfer, but then again “it’s a funny ol game”

  171. Richard says:

Great result today from everybody today. What’s extended your unbeat run to 7 matches?. it would appear the balance of the team is shaping up well.
